As we set out to pursue this flight training in preparation for missions, if we are honest with ourselves, we don’t know how it will be funded. But the Lord always provides. He is a good Father.
A while back, I said to my wife, Haley, “are we going to commit to this? Because if we do, we’re stepping out in trusting the King and following His lead. We might not know where the funding will come from or know where it will take us but we will trust Him for the next step.”
One of my favorite lessons from the Bible comes from Psalm 23. Most of us are quite familiar with this beautiful song. It begins, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want..” Many of us are familiar with the next lines in the Psalm, “He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me besides quiet waters.” I used to think this meant that the God Shepherd provides extravagance and excess for us. While many times this is true! It’s not actually the correct context of the Pslam. In the context of shepherding a flock of sheep in Israel several thousand years ago, the shepherd would lead his sheep through the desert where there was little grass or water. He would lead the flock to little patches of grass and little stagnant pools of water just enough to nourish the sheep long enough to make it to the next pool or patch of grass.
I love this! Because many times our western American mindset is a mindset of entitlement. A mindset where God is good if He gives us abundance. However, the psalmist wants us to know that the Shepherd is good in providing just enough to make us trust Him. Providing what we need without making us dependent on the gift but dependent on the Giver.
He is so good! He continues to provide just enough for us to pursue this missional outreach. And often that provision comes in peculiar ways!
